    LEASING WITH A CCJ

    Car leasing with a CCJ

A county court judgment is not an automatic no. What matters is how many you have, how recent they are, and whether you have done something about them.

    Not all CCJs are equal

This is the part the automatic systems cannot handle, and it is the reason people with one old judgment keep getting treated like people with five recent ones.

One or two, with a payment plan you have kept to, often works in your favour. It shows somebody who hit a problem, faced it, and sorted it out. Our lending partner would far rather see that than an empty file with nothing to judge.

Several recent ones are a different matter. Four or five judgments over a short period tells a story about how bills get paid, and no amount of affordability on paper changes it.

Age matters as much as number. A judgment from four years ago that has been settled sits very differently to one from last spring that has not.

If you have one CCJ from a bad patch and you have been steady since, you are very likely the sort of customer we are set up for.

    Tell us about it

There is a box on our application for exactly this, and it is worth filling in properly.

If you tell us what the judgment was for, whether there is a plan, and how it is going, that goes in front of the underwriter with the rest of your paperwork. A parking fine you disputed and then settled is not the same as a defaulted loan, and the only way anybody knows the difference is if you say so.

Being upfront helps you here. It is the applications that arrive with nothing explained that get looked at hardest.

    How CCJs work, briefly

A CCJ is recorded on the Register of Judgments, Orders and Fines. If you pay it in full within a month of the judgment, it can be removed from the register altogether. Pay it after that and it stays on for six years from the date of the judgment, marked as satisfied.

Satisfied is much better than unsatisfied. It does not remove the record, but it changes what it says about you, and it is the single most useful thing you can do if you have an outstanding judgment and are thinking about applying for anything.

    What we do differently

Your bank statements are read first. Three months of them, plus your driving licence. Our lending partner's underwriter reads them himself and works out whether the payments would sit comfortably alongside everything else you pay. No credit check happens at this stage.

The credit check comes second, and only if that part works. It is a full search, it will be recorded, and it is where the judgments show up. By then somebody has already established that you can afford the car, so the conversation is about what happened rather than whether to bother.

A person makes the decision. That is why one CCJ does not end the conversation here, and does almost everywhere else.

    What you will need

The first three months up front. Somewhere between £900 and £1,200 depending on the car. There is no no-deposit version.

Income from work. Employed or self-employed, £1,500 a month minimum after tax.

Payments up to date right now. Including any judgment you are paying off. Past trouble is fine. Being behind today is the difficulty.

A full UK driving licence, and an address in mainland England or Wales.

    What it costs

Most cars are between £300 and £400 a month, including VAT and road tax for the three years. Delivery and collection are free. Servicing, tyres, MOT and insurance are yours, and you will need fully comprehensive cover.

Agreements run for 36 months with 10,000 miles a year. At the end you hand the car back. There is no option to buy it.

    When we cannot help

    • Several CCJs, with at least one in the last year. Two from a bad patch four years ago is one thing. Five in the last eighteen months is another.
    • You cannot cover the first three months up front.
    • Your income is from benefits or other sources only, with nothing earned alongside it.
    • You are behind on payments right now, or direct debits are bouncing.
    • You drive more than 12,000 miles a year.
    • You have been declared bankrupt and have not yet been discharged.

    Questions people ask

Often, yes. One or two judgments, particularly older ones with a payment plan you have stuck to, are not a barrier for us. Several recent ones usually are.

    Find out where you stand

Send us three months of bank statements and tell us about the judgment in your own words. We will come back to you within one working day, before any credit check is run.
